May News from The Global Student

Message from the Director

As the unusual wet weather continues throughout May, at TGS we have been kept busy preparing for our June arrivals. With internship programs from 4 universities (plus individuals), a Team internship program in Penang, a community development program in Sabah, a volunteer program in Vietnam, and our Criminal Justice Study Tour and Global Education Practicum in KL, we look forward to managing the tight schedule with our expanded team.

The Holy month of Ramadan begins this Friday May 26, ending with Hari Raya Aidil-fitri celebrations on June 25. The following week is one of feasting and spending time with family, so schools and many businesses will be closed. This has created havoc for our program scheduling, with universities needing to be flexible around arrival and departure dates, but provides some extra downtime for interns who wish to explore further afield while in–country.

This month we enjoyed a visit with our partner Brad from CIS Australia, who in addition to meeting the TGS staff, met with some internship hosts, visited some accommodation and enjoyed some Malaysian hospitality. Pity the rain dampened our visit to Helibar – the bar on a rooftop helipad with 360degree views.

In May we have also welcomed Grace Simpson from Warrnambool, who has arrived to intern with TGS for three months. As well as general administration duties, Grace looks forward to meeting the interns and working on the programs, while gaining a cultural experience and enjoying the Malaysian food!

We are increasingly being approached by new companies seeking interns for specific projects and experiences. These are longer term, many want three months, and for those really serious about gaining a really immersive cultural and business experience in Malaysia. Below are some samples:

Learning through relationships

As we are preparing for the arrival of our June students and putting the finishing touches to their programs, I have been reflecting on just how much the success of the programs depends on the relationships we have built in KL and beyond. All kinds of service providers, internship hosts and government officials respond so enthusiastically to help create valuable educational programs and to ensure our students have an unforgettable experience. And as we get excited about providing interesting opportunities while meeting the requirements of the home universities, so do our internship hosts, study tour partners and even friends and family, who all begin suggesting activities or events that the students might enjoy, be it hiking on a Sunday, a day trip to eat fresh seafood on the coast, or a poetry slam at a local pub! One thing is common is that everyone wants to see them have a great time.
