March 2017

Message from the Director

The month of March was spent mostly in Australia, where I was fortunate to spend time with my family, attend the Port Fairy Folk Festival, attend my high school reunion, and liaise with many of our current partners and also some new ones. The weather in Victoria was mostly perfect Autumn weather, and while Sydney was rather damp it was still warm and hospitable.

Meetings this time focused on advising on NCP bids with an increased focus on internships and the development of consortia bids, and duplicating some of our existing study tours. It’s always useful to meet face-to-face to follow up on programs even if we have already determined what they will be like, and meeting the staff on the ground who assist to mobilise students is worthwhile.

Alicia was also able to accompany me in order to build her program knowledge and meet partners, while Teena and Natasha held the fort back in KL and prepared for our upcoming Internship Forum for potential hosts. The forum is designed to provide potential hosts with all the info they require to successfully host an Australian student, and assist us to develop our host database.

April will also require quite a bit of regional travel for program development, and we will also welcome our first program for the year – Swinburne Global Tradies to Cambodia. The third iteration of this program led by Jon Wallace will see two female tradies join the program for the first time – two young plumbers – who will join their colleagues in returning to Kampot to compete the performing arts centre and upgrade facilities at the school.

Good luck to all with your NCP submissions, and if you still require advice or assistance in preparing for bids, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Deakin MTI Penang

Deakin MTI once again took place on the Island of Penang in February. Not only was it a great academic experience for the students, but Penang is one of the best places in Asia to ring in the Chinese New Year!
The Deakin MTI program sees students placed in groups of 4 and working with businesses and organisations to help deliver a solution to a real business problem. Examples this year include Penang Performing Arts Centre,  and  the Collaborative Research In Engineering Science and Technology Center (“CREST”)

Swinburne Summer Interns – Reflection

Christmas in Langkawi, New Years in Singapore, a girl’s weekend in Phuket and Chinese New Year in Penang. Sounds more like the ideal holiday rather than a university internship program!

Swinburne business tudents were sure to make up for missing the Australian summer when they completed their Internships. Now that they settle back into Uni life and reflect on their Summer experience in KL, some are now helping to promote the program to students looking to avoid the impending Melbourne Winter. One student is already planning a future University Exchange. While Many students long for Summer Holidays, the group spent the Summer months working in a range of firms in KL. Placements included Engineering, Accounting, the Victorian Government Business Office and Public Relations

April 12 will see us host our first Internship Forum, where we seek to engage a number of new companies in order to expand our database of internship hosts to accommodate the increase in interest for Malaysian internships from both universities and individual students.
